Fouman Faculty of Engineering: A Pioneer in Offering Modern Approaches to Engineering Skill Training

On Wednesday, 19/09/1404, for the first time in Gilan province, a special conference titled "Experiential Learning and Modern Approaches in Engineering Skill Training" was held at the Faculty premises by the Fouman Faculty of Engineering in cooperation with the Nafas Creative Innovation Center.

This specialized promotional conference was held in line with the core mission of University of Tehran—as the symbol of the country's higher education—to evolve into an "Entrepreneurial and Socially Responsive University." Consequently, it supports the mission of the Fouman Faculty of Engineering to train engineers who are responsive to industry needs by offering modern engineering skill training methods. The objective was to build culture and elevate the province's educational standards in proportion to the requirements of industry and society.

Since strengthening the connection between students and industries during their studies is a key strategy for realizing the aforementioned goals, a "three-part activity" package is currently being implemented at the Fouman Faculty of Engineering (University of Tehran Colleges of Engineering). This executive package consists of: a course from the skill training and employment package (titled Experiential Learning), an internship, and the undergraduate senior project.

To this end, during the mentioned conference, 51 students from the Experiential Learning course—spanning the fields of Computer, Industrial, Chemical, and Petroleum Engineering—presented specialized articles on this subject under the guidance of the course instructor (Dr. Atefeh Hassanzadeh). These presentations were delivered in the presence of industry owners as industrial mentors for the practical section of the course, as well as provincial officials, including managers from the Gilan Department of Labor, Cooperation, and Social Welfare; the Association of Top Entrepreneurs of the Province; the Technical and Vocational Administration of Fouman and Shaft counties; the Department of Education; and officials from other relevant centers in the province.

A unique feature of this conference was the delivery of team-based lectures on current and applied topics in engineering skill training through the lens of experiential learning. Student teams presented these topics using professional, modern academic methods within a competitive and motivational atmosphere. The specialized topics were as follows:

  1. Data Case Study: A Teaching and Learning Method for Computer Science Education in Schools
  2. Experiential Learning Based on Computer Games
  3. Sustainability Education through Green Chemistry: An Experiential Learning Approach
  4. Case Study on the Implementation of Experiential Learning Integrated with Virtual Reality Technology in Teacher Training
  5. Effective Application of Operator Training Simulators in Experiential Education
  6. Application of the Experiential Learning Model to Increase Student Motivation and Learning Outcomes
  7. Towards Transformative Experiential Learning in Science and Technology-Based Entrepreneurship Education for Sustainable Technological Innovation
  8. Investigating the Educational Implications of Virtual Laboratories: A Case Study of a Section Design Project
  9. Experience-Based Learning with Live Case Studies: Benefits, Challenges, and Educational Impacts
  10. Case Study on the Application of Chemical Concepts and Arguments by Students in Teaching Sustainability-Focused Chemistry Regarding Pesticide Use, Considering Diverse Scientific Worldviews
  11. A Project-Based Learning Approach for Chemical Engineering Students: Producing Biodiesel from Waste Cooking Oil for Application in Portable Stoves
  12. Designing an Innovative Computer Science Curriculum: Integrating STEM and Project-Based Learning in Accordance with NEP 2020 – A Case Study on Web Technologies
  13. Review of an Experiential Learning Project: A Case Study Through Kolb’s Learning Theory

Dr. Hassanzadeh, a faculty member and the Scientific Deputy of the Fouman Faculty of Engineering, stated in an interview with the reporter from Gilan Provincial Broadcasting (Seda va Sima) that the urgent need of our society today is to have educated youth who possess skills.

To this end, the university must update and equip itself to achieve this goal and, in addition to strengthening theoretical foundations, take action to enhance the skills of its students as much as possible.

University of Tehran, as the nation’s top and leading higher education institution, has correctly identified this national need. By adopting the motto of an "Entrepreneurial and Responsive University" as its priority, it has mandated the Fouman Faculty of Engineering to act in this direction and train engineers who are responsive to the industry.

This objective is currently at the top of the Fouman Faculty of Engineering's agenda. Educational and research activities for both students and professors are seriously focused on three axes: entrepreneurship development, the promotion of skill training, and culture building; this conference stands as a prominent example of such activities.

At the conclusion of the conference, following specialized judging, prizes were awarded to the top teams.

Furthermore, the support of industry owners for all student teams, alongside the continued collaboration and backing from the participating innovation centers for the presenting teams, was another prominent feature of this conference, promising a fresh start for the hardworking students of this course.

It is hoped that the effort made will be an effective step in increasing student motivation and qualitatively elevating the level of education to meet the needs of society and industry. Ultimately, it is hoped that these results will establish the Fouman Faculty of Engineering as a prominent faculty within University of Tehran and secure a special position for Gilan province at the national level.
