Dr. Faili's Leadership in Artificial Intelligence: From Student Research to International Honors

Please introduce yourself and mention which section of IEEE you participated in and the topic you presented.

I am Faili,  member of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Tehran. I had the honor of receiving the IEEE Professor Anvari Award, which is typically given to researchers in the field of computer science. I have been working in the field of artificial intelligence for several years.

What impact does the research or project you presented at IEEE have on your field?

My research focuses on large language models (LLMs), commonly known as ChatGPT. This research, which started during my student years, has now gained significant recognition. Today, LLMs lead the field of artificial intelligence, causing transformative changes in industry and daily life, and their impact will only grow.

What challenges did you face during your research or project, and how did you overcome them?

One of the challenges in computer science is computational infrastructure. This limitation forced us to seek faster solutions and use smaller AI models, which demanded additional hard work and dedication.

In your opinion, what areas should future research in this field focus on?

One priority should be assessing the impacts of AI models on human life. Currently, these impacts are not fully visible in Iran. More applied research is needed in this area, and the gap between academia and industry must be bridged. Although we are in a promising position, researchers should consider industrial needs more carefully in the future.

Do you have any advice for young students and researchers?

I don't see myself in a position to give advice, but I recommend creating a balance between basic and applied research in our country, leaning more towards applied research. Unfortunately, some students pursue research without understanding the country's needs, which is a negative trend. My clear recommendation is for students and researchers to better identify the needs of industry and aim to address these through their work.
